St Philip’s Christian College – Newcastle was crowned Champions at the 2020 NSW State & National SUBS in Schools competition at the end of last year.

In only their second year participating in the competition the team took out the top spot after making significant improvements to their submarine.

The SPCC Newcastle team were supported by local defence industry organisation, BlueZone Group BlueZone Group – Quality Subsea Products and Services who provided industry mentoring for the project and the opportunity to attend their site and make use of the onsite tank for testing and development.

SUBS in Schools is about problem-solving, and there are hundreds of problems to be solved to get an ROV or Submarine to work. Designed to mimic the design methodologies utilised in Industry, SUBS in Schools has a significant emphasis on engagement with industry and exposure to current Industry 4.0 practices.
