2019 HUNTER REGION TECH GIRLS ARE SUPERHEROES SHOWCASE
November 20, 2019 @ 3:00 pm

2019 saw the highest number of Hunter region teams register and take part in the nation-wide Tech Girls are Superheroes competition. Created by Dr. Jenine Beekhuyzen of the Tech Girls Movement Foundation, the Tech Girls are Superheroes competition inspires young women to solve important community problems with technology skills and business acumen through coding and development of an app over a 12-week period.
Through the support of RDA Hunter’s ME Program, the STEM Industry School Partnership (SISP) program and the Cessnock Academy of STEM Excellence (CASE) the Hunter region had 18 teams from primary and secondary schools participate in the national competition.
The Hunter region fared well with a team from Warners Bay HS taking out winners in the NSW Secondary School category for their app, HopIn and a team from St Joseph’s Catholic College, Lochinvar placing first in NSW Secondary School Region category for AVO (Awesome Vibes Online).
A team from Dungog HS were also recognized for their app BAM Clubs in the 2019 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Awards in the Community category.
The St Joseph’s Catholic College team said, “overall, we found the Tech Girls Are Superheroes competition a valuable and enjoyable experience and we learnt lots about the world of coding, business, advertising, pitching and entrepreneurship.”
To celebrate the success of the Hunter region in the competition, the ME Program, SISP & CASE are hosting the first ever Regional Tech Girls are Superheroes Showcase. The event which will be held at the Newcastle Museum Theatrette on Wednesday 20 November 2019 will be an opportunity for friends, family, school community and industry representatives to come together and see the hard work of all the teams in the Hunter region throughout the competition.
Each team will have a display table setup with their working apps and portfolios and will present a 3-minute elevator pitch on their app.
We would like to say a huge congratulations to all the schools and teams who participated in the 2019 Tech Girls are Superheroes competition and we are looking forward to working with you all and the Tech Girls Movement again in 2020.
